We have received a question about IP tracking of visitors.

The Apache server run a log file, that we save for some weeks. Older, deleted files, could be recovered from the disk.

The forum save the IP of every post, as well as latest IP of each logged in visitor.

The E.U. is reported to save ALL accesses for 12 months.

My suggestion is as follows:
Search and provide a link to the Apache, to some tool that limit the logging of IP addresses.
Several other sites also need to limit racking of visitors, so I expect the FUD-Forum to soon have a built-in functions to limit storage of IP:s.

For the E.U., the simplest is to hack on, to give them a healthy list of IP:s to search.

We have changed the set-up, so older deleted files cannot be recovered using forensic techniques. The Apache log file is written to a RAM drive, so it will not be available for analysis if some one grab the server. The contents of the RAM dive is lost if the server restarts.

We cannot protect data transmitted over the Internet at this time.
